When Animals Get Up in the Morning feltboard

Here are some new felt board figures I made recently. The thing I love about this is that you could use any animals you happen to have around. Most of these guys are bigger in scale than the rest of my felt collection. I borrowed the chicken from my Little Red Hen set, and I think it's obvious she doesn't match. When I've got the time, I'll try and make a new chicken, more in the style of the duck, to go with the rest.

Here is the song that I sing with it:

When dogs get up in the morning,
they always say hello.

When dogs get up in the morning,
they always say hello.

Woof, woof. Woof, woof.
That is what they say.

Woof, woof. Woof, woof.
That is what they say.

And so on, and so forth, depending on which animals you've got. I wish I could describe the tune I'm using... but I'm deliriously unmusical!
You can sing as many rounds as you have felt animals, and/or as many rounds as the kids will sit still for. I always end with this verse:

When people get up in the morning,
we always say hello.

When people get up in the morning,
we always say hello.

Hello, hello. Hello, hello.
That is what we say.

Hello, hello. Hello, hello.
That is what we say.

It's a nice gentle song, I try to keep it pretty mellow and slow-paced. Afterwards, the kids like to point out which animals have eyes, and which ones don't have eyes.

  1. Beautiful felt pieces! I think your hen looks perfectly fine. All the animals are engaging and draw your eyes right to them. :-)

It's funny because as I was reading your song, I heard a tune in my head that seemed to work ~ kinda happened naturally!

This is a cute idea and reminds me of a livelier song for farm animals that we sing at our storytimes. At the end of the song ~ after all the animals make their sounds ~ then "the people on the farm say, How do you do!" We do a puppet show with the farm animals and then at the end our puppeteers pop-up with farmers' hats on and wave at the kids who always dissolve into fits of laughter after the first stunned moment of surprise. LOL!

  2. This is cute and easy. I may try this with woodland animals for my nature class.

  3. I use this song with my Baby Time group and a PPT presentation. The PPT is mainly for the adults, so we can all sing, chant and rhyme together. One mom suggested adding some animation to the presentation, so I started with this song. I pick about 4 different animals and introduce them one at a time, them have them exit after we sing a verse for them. The children seem to enjoy the visual stimulation, but I wonder if it is a bit like watching tv or a video? Anyway this is a great song and I always encourage parents to sing this song with their children while riding in the car etc., just include any animal that makes a noise.

    1. I know some folks who use creatively done slide presentations during storytime - but I've never really found a way to successfully incorporate them. I feel like I become invisible once there's a tv screen or slideshow to look at!

  4. These animals are adorable - love the dog. I do something similar but I use puppets..."when the cat gets up in the morning she always says Me-oow" We sing that three times and then go on to the next animal. I have a bunny puppet in my bag and we sing "when the bunny gets up the morning he always says sshhh.." We keep our song mellow as well and the children love the animal sounds. I learned this in my Mother Goose on the Loose Training with Betsey Diamant Cohen. Thanks for posting!

  6. Jane, your bunny idea is adorable. I never thought to have the bunny say, "shhh!"

That would be a perfect lead into to another book...

Thanks for the suggestion. I am always looking for good ways to transition from an active song or rhyme back into a quieter activity. This transitioning helps prepare the little ones for a preschool or Kindergarten setting. :-)

  7. I feel like we have a song similar to this ... but when kids get up in the morning this is what they saaaaaay, they say "mommy daddy, mommy, daddy"... Also doing it flannel is probably easier than the puppets we use. that transition between each puppet is never long enough. Nice.

  8. Thanks! I really feel like the older kids in my storytimes keep me on my toes. They love feltboards - especially new ones.

  9. Super cute - and an AWESOME flannel for me to copy because the kids sing this song during our monthly music program. Your animals look GREAT, by the way! Thanks for sharing!

  10. Your dog is cute! I love the detail on his collar. I only wish I had this song last month for my "Farm Animals" story time. Oh well, next time.
